Romsey Women’s Institute

Romsey Women’s Institute brings together women from across the town and surrounding areas for evenings filled with engaging speakers and a real sense of camaraderie. The main gatherings take place on the fourth Wednesday each month at Crosfield Hall Annexe on Broadwater Road, where members enjoy talks on everything from historical topics to contemporary issues, often followed by tea and plenty of conversation.

Beyond the monthly meetings, the group runs several subgroups that meet independently. The craft group gets hands on with knitting, sewing and other making activities, while the walking group explores local paths and countryside trails.

Scrabble enthusiasts battle it out regularly, and the book club dives into a mix of fiction and non-fiction choices. Darts sessions add a competitive edge, the lunch club heads out to local spots for meals, and theatre trips provide chances to catch shows further afield.

The institute marked its 50th anniversary with a literary day focused on women writers, featuring authors like Laura Bates and local historians, which drew praise for its thoughtful programme and community spirit. Members also join in Hampshire Federation events, such as quizzes and skittles tournaments against other institutes.

Feedback from those involved highlights the welcoming atmosphere and variety on offer. Attendees at events describe it as inclusive and energising, with many noting the strong friendships formed through shared interests. The group rates highly among participants for its blend of education, fun and support.

Part of the national Women’s Institute network, Romsey WI stays true to promoting skills, campaigns and connections for women today. New faces are always encouraged, whether to dip in occasionally or get fully involved.
