Romsey Good Neighbours
Romsey Good Neighbours started back in 1982 as a simple way to lend a hand with medical trips for those over 60, or anyone elderly, infirm, or disabled who struggled to get out. What began small has turned into a proper lifeline, now handling around 2500 journeys each year for about 1000 registered clients across Romsey, Ampfield, and Braishfield.
The core service revolves around volunteer drivers using their own cars to ferry people to appointments. That covers hospitals in Southampton or Winchester, GP surgeries, dentists, opticians, physiotherapists, chiropodists, hearing clinics, or even further afield like Lymington or Hythe.
Drivers tend to pick trips that suit them, some sticking close to town, others happy for longer runs across Hampshire. Everything gets coordinated through an online booking system managed by office volunteers who match requests to available drivers.
It all runs on volunteers. Drivers get mileage expenses covered, and everyone goes through DBS checks for peace of mind. Office roles involve taking calls and sorting bookings, with training on hand and shifts that fit around other commitments, often just mornings or afternoons. The setup keeps things flexible and community-focused, funded through client contributions, donations, and occasional grants.
People rely on it heavily, especially when family or public transport is not an option. Local care homes and organisations often highlight the difference it makes, with donations coming in regularly to keep wheels turning. The charity stays busy recruiting more drivers and coordinators to meet demand.
Articles and statements from supporters describe it as a wonderful service, with volunteers praised for going above and beyond. Clients and partners express gratitude for the reliable help that keeps people independent and attending vital appointments.
