Revitalising Romsey’s Historic Station Master’s House: A Community Dream Takes Shape
The Hampshire Community Rail Partnership (HCRP) is spearheading the project, aiming to turn the building into a vibrant community hub that locals can call their own.
For over 18 months, the partnership has gathered input from residents through public consultations, ensuring the plans reflect what the town truly needs. Drawing inspiration from successful revamps like the one at Shawford Station, the vision includes a cosy cafe and art gallery on the lower floors, with flexible spaces upstairs for meetings, events, and community gatherings.
The focus is on preserving the building’s historic charm, using traditional methods to repair water damage and structural issues while keeping original features intact.
Progress has picked up pace this year. In May, Test Valley Borough Council received an application for temporary signage to raise awareness about the redevelopment, a small but significant step in building momentum.
By late August, HCRP announced that fundraising efforts had secured substantial support, with more needed to push forward. They’ve teamed up with ep architects, who are leading the design, alongside Avon Construction and AWA engineers for the technical side.
Local contractors are set to be involved once designs are finalised, promising jobs and a boost for the area.
The full planning application is now heading to the council, following positive feedback from locals and authorities. If all goes smoothly with approvals, work could begin late this year or early next, wrapping up in about a year.
Proposals are on display at the station and will feature at the upcoming Romsey Show, inviting more community involvement.
Residents are buzzing about the potential. One local told us it’s about time the old house got some love, turning it from an eyesore into a spot for coffee, art, and chats. With the partnership’s dedication and town backing, this project could redefine how Romsey connects with its railway heritage, creating a welcoming space for everyone.
As the leaves turn this autumn, eyes are on the council’s decision. Stay tuned – Romsey’s station master’s house might soon be the heart of the community once more.
